My Favorite New Year’s Resolution Apps

Now that it’s mid-January, I’m starting to see the crowds at the gym lighten back up. Apparently not everyone has been able to stick to those New Year’s Resolution fitness plans after all! Even though changing bad habits is tough, technology has made it a bit easier to stay on track with your goals, whether they are fitness related or not. Since the start of the year, I’ve downloaded three free apps for my iPhone specifically geared toward my 2012 goals, so I thought I’d share the love and tell you why I dig them so much. For brides or grooms who have added getting in shape to their to do list before the big day, these apps are awesome for keeping you on track and consistent.

  1. Don’t Break the Chain – This is a really simple app, but it’s great for getting a visual representation of a daily goal, whether that’s to drink 8 glasses of water a day, take your dog for a long walk, write down what you ate or even to not smoke. You determine what the daily goal is, and when you complete it, you simply cross the date off the calendar. While there’s nothing magical about this app at all, there’s something about seeing a chain of red X’s that makes me want to keep checking days off the calendar. For me, my I have two factors that determine if I get to cross the day off – did I wash my face before going to bed (I was really bad about that in 2011, so it’s one of my 2012 goals) and if I was supposed to work out that day (I don’t workout 7 days a week, so my “off” days don’t count against me), did I work out? If the answer to both questions is yes, then a red X gets added to my calendar. It’s super simple, but I love it. It’s almost like getting a gold star for the day! And yes, I have washed my face before bed 16 days in a row… woo hoo!
  2. My Fitness Pal – I was a fan of the Lose It! app for logging my food, but what I like about My Fitness Pal is that you can track your macros (protein, carbs, fat, fiber, etc.) and set goals for each of those categories. Plus, it seems like there a lot more users of this website and app, so there are so many more foods already added to the database. I haven’t eaten a single food over the past two weeks that hasn’t already been entered into the database, even down to the name brand. Who would have thought that so many people are eating ground flax seed?! The app is great for planning your meals in advance or tracking items after you’ve already eaten them, although I learned the hard way that I do better when I plan my food in advance and know exactly how many calories and how much fat, carbs, etc. are in things before I eat them. Who would have thought that a side of sweet potato fries would be 900 calories!!?!
  3. Waterlogged – I track my water consumption in My Fitness Pal, but someone recently told me about Waterlogged and it would totally be my go to water tracker if I weren’t also tracking my food. To use it, you simply choose your water goal, and then mark off your water as you drink it. The empty water glass fills up as you record your water. Easy peasy.

I’m always looking for great iPhone and iPad apps, so tell me… what apps do you have that keep you on track with your goals?
