When to Order Your Wedding Gown

I started working with a new client a few weeks ago who is getting married in mid-May. Being a little more than four months out, I had two big concerns — finding a venue and finding a dress.

A lot of Dallas wedding venues book up close to a year in advance, particularly on Saturdays, so there was definitely some urgency to find a space that fit my client’s needs. Fortunately, we totally lucked out and were able to find several venues that had availability and picked the perfect location for her wedding. Now onto the dress…

Typically, you should order your gown 9-12 months before your wedding. In the 6-9 month window, brides will usually be o.k., but less than 6 months and chances are high that you will have to pay extra for a rush cut or might not be able to get the gown in all together. For brides wanting to do formal bridal portraits before the wedding, the 9-12 month window is ideal.

Brides looking to get hitched in less time shouldn’t panic but should change their perspective when it comes to finding the perfect wedding dress. Some bridal shops offer off-the-rack options, where you could leave with a gown in-hand the same day. A few alterations and that off-the-rack gown can feel every bit as special as a special-order gown! Department stores are also a great source for off-the-rack options, as many carry dresses in white and ivory that can make for beautiful, non-traditional gowns. Bridesmaids’ dresses can often be a nice alternative for a bride that wants something simple or understated. With most coming in about 3 months after they’re ordered, bridesmaids’ dresses can be a great option for brides with a tighter turn-around time. This satin bridesmaids dress by Jim Hjelm Occasions can be ordered in both ivory and white. If it were hanging in white in a dress shop, it would be hard to tell it wasn’t a bridal gown!

As far as my May bride goes, we were able to find a lovely Maggie Sottero gown at Bridal Boutique of Lewisville. The manufacturer just happened to have some hanging stock of the gown in my bride’s size, so it should arrive in about 8 weeks. Score!
