Hitched Events: How did you and Craig meet?
Rebecca Carpenter: We met at the end of our first year of law school. We were just friends for the next semester, and then, pretty much overnight, we started dating.
Tell us about your engagement!
The night before a much anticipated trip to San Francisco, Craig planned to do some of our favorite things. After dinner at Eno’s, we grabbed Paciugo and went to Lakeside Park, which is where we had our first “date.” Really, that first date entailed walking around the park with coffee until we found ourselves pretty close to a high speed chase and totally bailed. The night of our engagement was just as exciting, but obviously for different reasons. He proposed there at the park and we got to celebrate the entire long weekend in San Francisco.
How long was your engagement?
6 quick months. But as a disclaimer, we knew we wanted to get married in December, so we actually took care of some of the wedding planning before we got engaged. That way, we could get the venue and band we wanted before the big companies snatched them up for their Christmas parties.
What did you pick first.. the date or the venue?
We had it narrowed down to a month that we wanted to get married, then figured out what dates worked for both the venue and band and went with that.
Tell us about how the planning process went for you.
I am the girl that totally could have eloped and would have been happy. I hate to be the center of attention – my worst fear was that I would throw up when the church doors opened and everyone turned to watch me walk down the aisle (I didn’t – miracle). However, that would not have flown for my family (cough cough, my mom) so I did the whole big wedding thing. I picked the big items/vendors and then my mom got in there on the details. I was working full time, so I really didn’t have time to worry about every little thing (nor did I really care). A couple of months out, I think my mom was getting pretty overwhelmed (probably due to my serious apathy regarding most decisions) and she started interviewing wedding planners. My mom had someone to help with all of the details and I had someone to run interference when I wasn’t a fan of something.
What was a must have for your wedding?
A band (or great music of some kind), stellar photographer, and a wedding planner. Our band got everyone dancing and having a great time, and that was very important to us. Of course, these pictures will be something we treasure forever so, for us, that was worth the investment.
What is your favorite memory from your wedding?
The first look and the last dance. Those two moments were just for us, nothing was rushed and we could truly enjoy everything about it.
Describe your overall experience with your wedding.
It was a fantastic party.. because, let’s be real, that’s what the reception is! What my mom and Kimberly put together was absolutely beautiful and it was so much fun.
If you could give one piece of advice to a couple in the process of planning their wedding, what would it be?
Pick from the start a few things that are really important to you and focus on those things and be ready to compromise (both financially and with the other parties involved) on the other things. Also, get help — it’s too hard to plan every little piece without someone who knows what they are doing.
